+ The Hushwing Collection

The Hushwing Collection combines all three of our main line palettes, offering 10 of our handmade watercolors together in one palette.

All of our colonial paints are made using natural earth pigments from the United States. American natural earth pigments contain more opacity than than natural earth pigments from Europe, and are preferred by artists for their powerful tinting strength.

The Cyprus paints are made using two natural earth pigments originating in Cyprus. Both pigments are increasingly rare and are carefully sourced to be able to bring you these beautiful and historical colors.

Prussian Blue has been a favorite of artists for centuries, including Picasso, Watteau, and Hokusai. It is often considered the first modern pigment after it’s discovery in 1705. Dye-maker Jacob Diesbach was in pursuit of creating a cochineal red pigment when a chance chemical reaction occurred, creating Prussian Blue. Over time this brilliant blue has been used for more than just a pigment. Prussian Blue was essential to creating the first architectural blueprints and is also used in contemporary medicine as an antidote for heavy metal poisoning.

+ Hardcover Watercolor Sketchbook

This hardcover watercolor sketchbook is expertly hand-bound and features a unique, one of a kind printed Lokta cover paper. Gold foil outlines flash alongside a red linen signature ladder binding and matching red inside cover papers. Created in collaboration with Lake Michigan Book Press as a part of our limited edition holiday collection, you’ll only find this sketchbook here in our shop!

Lokta is made by rural craftspeople in the highlands of Nepal, and we are thrilled to offer this exceptional paper as a feature of our watercolor sketchbooks. They farm the Daphne bush, which is harvested and stripped of it’s bark to form the raw material used to create the paper sheets. Amazingly, the original plant is not destroyed and will regenerate from the roots! The stick, once it’s bark has been removed, is dried and used to heat the villager’s homes or provide fuel for the paper production. Using reclaimed and reused water, the Daphne bark Is beaten by hand and boiled until it is broken down into a pulp. Next, it is combined with recycled paper scrap and then poured into screens to form sheets. These sheets are then dried in the sun. The entire paper-making process is not only earth-friendly but also provides for a large and thriving community!

+ The Paint-Making Process

During production, pigment is mulled by hand on a glass slab with a combination of gum arabic, honey, and food grade preservative. Each pigment has it’s own unique recipe that has been tested over time to ensure the perfect balance of pigment to binder. All pans are hand poured and dried in thin layers which minimizes cracking and prevents air bubbles, ensuring the pan is as full as possible. However, some cracking is normal and will appear depending on the climate and the pigment. Cracking in the pan will not affect the use or the ability of the paint to re-wet.
